Homes For Feathered Friends

With warmer weather, it truly felt like spring at the Homestead. We had a wonderful time completing our chores, wandering through the woods. Thanks to our special guest, Todd sleeper, we learned more about how to keep our rivers clean and how to encourage bluebirds to make their homes at the farm.

Grooming horses is like so much else in life, you can do a quick job or be really thorough. Some of you painted the horses hooves (toenails) to make them stronger and shiny. Think about what you could add to your grooming routine to give your horse a total body clean up. Can you remember 3 reasons we groom our horses? (quiz next week:)
The hens laid a funny egg today. What did it look/feel like and why was it not quite Egg-xactle normal? Donald is still alone but not for too long. What project is next for us before we can get any more duck friends?
Our wander was filled with discoveries of spring. We found some tracks on the ground! Can you guess what animal this might have been from? Great find!

Tell someone at home what you got up to during our wander!
Check out this Bouquet that blue racer and sunflower won from the horse competition.

Todd Sleeper has been organizing the Thames River Cleanup since 2001. How many years has the cleanup been happening? For those of you who would like to help with the river clean up, check out this website for all the information needed. https://thamesrivercleanup.ca/ They will be gathering on April 18th and would love your help!
After learning about Todd's experiences, we got to hang up some bird nests. Reflect on the bird nest boxes around the farm, can you remember some of the birds that made their homes in these last year?
We are excited for our Coyote nature school to share their poems with the St. Marys Poetry Circle from 1-3 at the River walk Commons on Saturday April 11th (Readings at 2pm). If you are someone who will be reading a poem, look through these below to get some practice! More information on the event can be found at https://rwcommons.com/, scroll down to upcoming events.
Owl and Sunflower have prepared a beautiful song for this event too!
