Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Autumn is a time of decision-making for almost everything in nature. Squirrels are wondering if they’ve collected enough nuts. Monarchs are deciding their best departure date. Crayfish are searching for the perfect place to dig their burrows in the mud and some people continue to ask “Is it still warm enough to wear shorts?" Our focus for today was how different animals and birds adapt to changes in the fall.
We decided that the biggest decision animals and birds have to make is whether they should stay or go. Their choices are to migrate, hibernate - either for the whole winter or on and off, or stay and adapt. In the game, “What do you do?”, you had to try to guess what choice each animal or bird makes and run to that action card. If you were right, what did you receive and what did it mean? By the end of the game, were you a creature who was able to survive 5+ months of winter?

Each week when we come to nature school, we have our own adaptations to make. Whether it’s
due to the weather or new activities or changes happening on the land around us, we have to make adjustments. Take a look at some of the other things you did at the farm today and think about whether you had to make any changes.

Hedgehog had a big change today - she is now 4 years old! As part of our birthday tradition this year, we each presented her with a wooden bead which represented either a wish for her or a compliment. Then we strung all of the beads together so she could wear her birthday bracelet all day! Hope you had a very happy birthday, Ridley!
‘Going with the flow’ is a saying that means you are able to adjust to change. As
Chickadees, you do this very well.

Thank you so much for being such a flexible and inquisitive group of nature explorers!
