The secret to being able to notice the small details when we’re out in nature can be summed up in 2 words: remain quiet. Although we often think of ‘quiet’ as being a bad thing, for many creatures and plants, but ‘quiet’ is actually what helps them survive. Did you know that trees communicate with each other by using tiny fungi on their roots? Bees communicate with each other by using a variety of dances. Ants can leave a scent trail as they travel so that other ants know where to find a good source of food. Today we explored different ways to unlock the secrets of our forests, fields, and stream by ‘turning down’ our own volume and using more of our senses. Just look at all of the amazing things we discovered today!
Discoveries around the Homestead

We discovered some painted rocks and decided to decorate them with our nature names.
We were happy to see some of favourite animals, including Little Beaver who hides on us in a different place each week.
Coyote's collection of specimens always draws the curious. What on earth will this big hole be for? Just like hunters, it's always important to practice your accuracy skills. Were you able to land your pinecone into one of the containers?
Discoveries in Crayfish Catch

We found a bonanza of crayfish, minnows, water striders, water boatmen, and even a small fish.
Every fisherman has a good story to tell about the one that got away. What's yours?
Discoveries with Antman

We had a lot of luck finding snails along the Outpost trail. What type of environment do they like?
Antman showed us how to use a jacket and 2 branches to construct a makeshift stretcher.
Discovery at Pine Haven

Today we learned that when in nature, it’s always good to stop and let your senses take in all of the wonders that surround us. It’s then that we begin to notice all the secrets Mother Earth has for us!
