An Unbe"leaf"able Day!

It was 'all hands on deck' to welcome a new addition, little Basswood to our family of tree friends at the farm.
It was 'all hands on deck' to welcome a new addition, little Basswood to our family of tree friends at the farm.

Warm hats and gloves, long pants and jackets were 4 signs that we are learning how to adapt to the cooler fall temperatures. But what about the plants and trees? What do they do when autumn arrives? That was the question we were trying to answer today.

We discovered why the leaves of deciduous trees are green in the spring and summer. Can you remember the name of the pigment that hides all of the other colours in the leaf? (chlorophyll)

We even became leaf detectives as we set off to find the items on our scavenger hunt sheet. Which were the easiest and the hardest items to find?

It was fun to play a game that helped us imagine what fall would be like if we were trees or plants. In the Jack Frost tag game, were you able to keep any of your leaves or did you have to stand still-save your energy and just wait for spring ? (This is what we mean when we say a tree is dormant.)

We loved listening to the story, “The Stranger” and trying to solve the mystery of why it was still summer around the Bailey farm when it should have been autumn. What clues did the author give to help us figure out who the mysterious stranger might have been? Share some of these clues with your family and see if anyone can guess who he was.

Poppers, droppers, fliers, floaters, grabbers and passers all are funny names for what?

During our seed walk, we were able to discover many examples of the different ways plants release their seeds in the fall. If you were a seed in the fall, how would you like to be released and why?
