Fall-filling Day

We are filled with the beauty of fall on the farm. Let's walk back through our day together.

YOUR HOMEWORK

Yes, that's right 'homework'. Yours is reading the blog EVERY time you come to the Homesteaders Program and answering the guiding questions. This is part of building up your knowledge and reflecting (thinking back) on what you did and how you might do it differently. We'll be asking you if you completed your homework next week!

You now have experience with all parts of the animal chores (a couple missed one or two as they were helping others). Can you re-tell the chore list for at least one of the chores from the clipboards, step by step. Are there any changes or additions we should make to these steps?

When we added eggs to a container filled with vinegar we noticed some changes right away, do you remember what you saw? (bubbles forming) What ways do you think these eggs will change once we revisit them next week? Tell someone at home about how this experiment taught us about one key ingredient in hens diets. (calcium)

Together we have a plan for our chore time until the end of fall session. Who is your chore buddy and what is your first chore? How did we figure out how to do this fairly and how do you feel about what our plan is now? It was interesting how the horse group felt it was better to take care of one horse completely rather than one task at a time. We'll see how this works out.

Bundled up tight we headed out for our wander at Pine Haven and snacked on the apples we created last week. If we were to dry apples again, think about what spices we could add to make them even more delicious. Were you a chef making dishes by the river, a whittler making new creations, or an explorer adventuring around the river?

You created some amazing designs while carving pumpkins! How did you come up with your ideas?

Pumpkin seeds spread like many other seeds around the farm. Think back to how pumpkin seeds are spread, (ingestion by an animal) try to think of two other types of seeds that are spread the same way. After carving the pumpkins we used the dehydrator to dry the seeds. What do you think will be the tastiest flavor combination when we try them next week?

We felt sad that Ant Man was not able to make an appearance for the last two weeks and decided to write him letters to show our appreciation. Tell someone at home a story about when you worked with Ant Man. What has he helped to teach you during his time as a mentor at Coyote Nature school during this fall and last year?

We had a reporter from the newspaper visit our farm. What would you say makes Homesteaders a unique and valuable experience for you? Check out the St Marys Independent paper next Wednesday for the article that highlights our fall-filling day!
