Fall Firsts, Summer Lasts

ree

Anyone who works, plays or learns outside will tell you that it’s often hard to say goodbye to summer and welcome fall with open arms. The problem isn’t actually fall itself…it’s usually the season that follows fall if you don’t happen to love the snow and cold. Lucky for us, Coyote Nature School kids and adults love all of the seasons!

Today, we loved watching the ducks enjoy the water in their pool before it freezes, We loved having toques and gloves to keep us warm and we were also amazed by the Autumn colours we found.

When you listened to the story, “Firsts and Lasts” it talks about how we can tell when one season is ending and a new one beginning, what other examples did you think of to describe the change between summer and fall?

Our active game today required us to change a lot. How did you feel about having to change spots so often? We know that some people like change, some people dislike change, and other people can see both sides. It might be interesting to find out how each person in your family feels about change.

Change was on all of our minds today as we set off on a Change Walk to see what differences we could find around Stoneridge Farm. How has the land changed since we started nature school and which changes surprised you the most?

Are there things your family does to celebrate the changes fall brings? We learned that camping activities don’t have to end if you know how to use a tarp and some rope to help you stay warm and dry. We also made nature suncatchers to help remind us of the gifts of summer as well as the glory of autumn.

By the end of our day, we were able to find many things about fall that make it a special season - the colours of the trees, the piles of leaves, how good a campfire feels. Every week, we are so lucky to be able to spend a whole day together. With Thanksgiving only a few days away, let’s take the time to appreciate all the people in our lives who love and care for us!
