Going, Going, Almost Gone!

The snow is melting around the hall and we’ve been seeing deer in the fields for almost a month, nibbling on the winter wheat the farmers planted in the fall. It’s beginning to look like shovels and sleds can be put away until next year and bicycle tires can be pumped up for those spring days ahead. Today was a day to say goodbye and ‘thank you’ to winter at nature school and celebrate all the joys it brought us.

Thank you Winter for all the glorious snow you gave us!

Today we were happy to still find enough to climb on, slide on, and race our snow snakes down.

Thank you Winter for helping reveal the secret travels of the deer in Harrington!

Which activities will you miss the most when you come back after the break? What's one thing you won't you miss about winter?

* New Discoveries we made today!*

Last week we learned about snow fleas or Springtails that can be found in snow especially in the early spring. Today, we decided to find out if clean-looking snow is actually clean and how dirty dirty snow actually is.

We started by looking for the cleanest patches of snow and the dirtiest. We filled up jars with snow and set them on the hot air vent to melt.

Next we poured the water from the cleanest snow through coffee filters to see how much dirt the filters collected and how clean the water was. What did we discover?

Then we did the same with the dirty snow samples. Yuck!

After doing this experiment would you ever eat snow again? (Please say no!)

The Blue Spruce Reading Contest

Grey Squirrel told us about the Blue Spruce reading contest and read us one of the 10 picture books. If we read all of them, we get to vote for our favourite book along with other children in Ontario to determine the winner. Please be sure you show your parents the information sheet if you want to participate.

Construction of the new bridge has started!

Although it's been an exciting winter, spring is just around the corner and there will be many new things to learn and discover! See if you can think about the different things we will be able to do once the bridge is finished.

As we say "See you next year, Winter", let's be sure show our appreciation to all of the people who helped make it possible for us to enjoy it.

A BIG thank you to Tamarack, Raccoon, Antman, Coyote, and especially our parents and guardians. You're the best!!
