Good Bye Wild Winter!

Bald Eagle looking at some geese.

As you walked along the trails, Mystery Forest, Sunrise Hill and Sunrise Field what did you notice?  Was it easier to walk around? How did the snow feel under your sled?  Bald Eagle noticed the geese enjoying the open water on Mill Pond and a hawk quietly sitting above them in a tree.  How did the binoculars work?

Winter is still here but soon things will change around the beautiful fields and forests of Harrington.  What will look the same and what will look different when you come back at the end of March?  Spring will be officially here!  Will it look like it, feel like it, smell like it, sound like it?  Maybe start a 5-senses journal while you are at home.  Record the things out in nature that you notice are changing or that have already changed in your surroundings.  Maybe you can make your own notebook of your observations and share it with us when you come back to Coyote Nature School!

Our Coyote Nature School Director, Coyote(Kendra), came for a visit in the morning and read us Wild Beings.  What kind of things did you have in common with our animal friends? We are all connected! Having fun, exploring and playing in beautiful Mother Nature.   Hope you enjoyed our game of log par cours, Coyote!  We also learned about winter birds. Do you remember which bird is mostly the colour red, blue, white? Do you remember the calls or words used to help us remember the calls of the birds in our game?  What bird sound did Coyote make that was the signal to return back to your home?  What bird would you like to learn more about?  The feeder bird poster Coyote showed had many different types of birds on it.  Or maybe the bird you would like to research is your own nature name?  Hmmm…Something to think about.

Wild mysteries are all around us!  So many to count.  The deer Coyote saw were suddenly out of sight when we went back to have a look.  What will the construction on the bridge look like when we return?  Looking for hearts hidden in Mystery Forest.  Whose name did you find? What kind words did you hear today from a fellow Turtle? Did they smile when you were talking to them?

In the library Grey Squirrel told us about the Blue Spruce Reading Program. She read the book called “The Mystery Letter” which is one of the books that is nominated for the Blue Spruce Award . Do you remember what the story was about? What was the unexpected surprise? Is there a friend in our group who you will miss while we are away? Try writing them a little message or a letter or simply draw them a picture while you are at home. Write down some stories or activities you would like to share with them next time you meet. Looking forward to seeing some deliveries when we return!

There are lots of surprises and mysteries that await us but one thing is for sure.  We will be excited to learn together, eat together, be active together and explore together.  The more we learn in nature the happier we’ll be.  Until we meet again!

Take a look at some other pictures from our day!

We are so proud of all the Turtles for their creativity and effort in writing poetry this year for April's Poetry Month in St. Marys. A showing of their work will be displayed around town. Students with their families are encouraged to attend the Poetry Reading event on April 11 at Station Gallery in St. Marys.

Here's a preview of the poetry from our Talented Turtles.
