Listen to the Creek Speak

One of the most beautiful sounds at the farm can be heard as we walk along the creek. In the spring, the water seems alive as it rushes and gushes over rocks, excited to have been released from winter’s cold grasp. In the summer, it relaxes as it meanders more slowly, murmuring and babbling to the creatures who live in it and around it. Today, we decided we would linger longer down at the creek and get to know who calls it home.

Who or what lives in or near Crayfish Creek?

Think about some of the discoveries you made today as we walked the length of the creek on both the north and south sides. Use the photos below to talk about the creatures and plants that live in the creek or close by.

Taking a Closer Look in the Creek

Explain how you made a pond view finder using a milk carton and what you were able to see when you used it. This is a project you can do on your own this summer if you are planning to visit another creek or a stream.

Games: In the Stream and Out, Frog Hop relay, Turtle Crawl

You had the chance to hop like frogs and walk like turtles in the games we played today. You also did a great job pretending you were Donald the Duck who escaped last week and who we found going in and out of the creek.

Which game did you like the best and why?

Snails

Antman became ‘Snailman’ today as we tried to take a closer look at the snails who live around the creek. Although we found a lot of empty shells, we only found 2 snails who were brave enough to be out and about in the cold, wet, windy weather. Our plan B turned out to be just perfect! Explain what we did with boards and clay pots to help our one-footed friends. If you were a snail, which ‘hide’ would choose to take shelter in?

Mother’s Day Craft

We hope you didn't mind waiting a bit longer for your nature heart! Here are a few pictures Raccoon took while we were making them.

Special thanks goes out to Grasshopper who recently used Raccoon's camera to capture a few amazing nature shots for us. We think he is a natural born photographer!
