Our Power, Our Planet

Did you know that the title of this blog is actually the theme for this year’s 56th anniversary of Earth Day? The movement was started to remind us that we all need to work together to ensure we are taking good care of Mother Earth. The question we were asking ourselves today was “How can the kids at Coyote Nature School use their power to help make a difference?”

What did you learn today that will make you a better caretaker of the Earth? Think about the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle), what it means to ‘Leave No Trace’, and  the ways our actions are harming the environment.

Our special guest today was Junco (Linda) and she is a great example of a person who cares about our planet and who tries to leave a very small foot print on the environment. Talk with your family about her wooden animal carvings as well as the recycled cloth bead project she did with us. In what ways is she looking after the environment?

It’s important to make time throughout the year to consider how or why nature and the environment matter to us. Think about some of the questions on the Nature Gratitude reflection sheet. What did you learn about yourself as a naturalist and nature lover? Are there certain areas of nature that matter the most to you (animals, water, plants, birds, pollution)?

Earth is our planet, our home, and our future. We each have the power to make sure Mother Earth is healthy and happy. How will you use your strengths and interests, not just on Earth Day but every day to create the future she deserves?
