Seeds - Sow What?

From the Haudenosaunee people who grew the 3 Sisters to hydroponic farms which grow plants without any soil, gardening has evolved over time. However, the one thing that has stayed the same is that gardening fills both our bellies and our souls. See if you can remember some of the ways gardens help us as well as other creatures. What type of garden do you dream of having and why?

Our morning activities offered different opportunities to get to know seeds better by ...

*Becoming a ‘seed archaeologist’ and trying to remove seeds from fruits and vegetables

Hedgehog's cherry tomato took the prize for having the most seeds - 102!

*Taking a closer look at seeds, both outside and inside

*Learning how to use estimation skills to guess how many seeds were in different containers

How did it feel to be a seed in our game “Bloom or Doom”? What were the 5 things you needed to get in order to make it to the garden? Which creatures were you trying to avoid?

There was more to be discovered around the farm and out on the trails today such as identifying plants, choosing a sprout to measure and track, looking for fossils, discovering how seeds travel, as well as trying to solve the mystery of a dead crow.

Wow! Who knew you had such a green thumb?! We plan to keep our germination project going for another week to see if any sprouts will be ready to be  transplanted. If your family is already planning a garden, try to leave room in it for your garden. If you aren’t having a garden, perhaps you can put your sprout in a separate pot. If neither of these ideas will work, see if you have a relative or neighbour who would just love to help your plant keep on growing!

In the story we read called, 'If You Plant a Seed", we learned that we can also sow seeds of kindness. Talk to your family about what this means and then see how many seeds of kindness you can plant and what happens when you do.
