Although there was a chill in the air this morning, were you one of the Herons buzzing with excitement about your plans for the coming night? We all looked a bit like Monarch butterflies with our orange and black clothing as we flitted from one nature activity to another. Were you able to hit a pumpkin using a forest and a ghost marshmallow? Which of the games or activities were your favourite and why?
Our library time with Grey Squirrel was also jam-packed with nature-related books and crafts.
Our nets have been empty for a few weeks now because the crayfish are moving to deeper water and digging burrows for the winter. We wondered what other creatures go below ground in order to survive. What did you learn about amphibians like frogs and toads?

We realized that we have only seen one frog since nature school started this year and wondered
why. What do you think could be a reason? As kids concerned about nature, what did we decide to do that might help increase the frog and toad population in the spring? Use the photos below to help explain what we built. (a hibernaculum)

Welcome to your new home, Harrington frogs and toads! Hope to see you in the spring!
Instead of always taking from nature, it feels good to stop and find ways to give back.
As Herons, you worked together, side-by-side as a team to build the hibernaculum so that it would be a safe refuge for toads and frogs over the winter. Mother Nature would be very proud of you!
