Sowing Seeds of Stewardship

Even though Earth Week officially ended last week, didn’t it feel great to start practicing the slogan “Every day is Earth Day”? We were lucky to have the chance to help members of the Harrington Community do a spring clean up around the pond this morning. Our job included removing a lot of tree branches along the west side trail. We thought we would be picking up a lot of litter too but the good news is, we couldn’t find any. It looks like other people who use the conservation area are also making sure every day is Earth Day!
The questions we were trying to answer today were all about seeds and plants, different types of gardens and how they are helpful to us and to other creatures? Which activities did you like the best and why?

It was so exciting to see how your germination projects are doing! Each one of you made sure your seed's needs are being met. Can you name the 5 things they must have in order to grow? The plan is to give them another week at home to grow even more. Please bring them back next Friday and we’ll see if any are ready to be transplanted into soil.

We also each found and adopted a tiny sprout near Mystery Forest which we plan to measure every week and track its growth. How tall is your sprout and how much do you think it will grow in 6 weeks? It would be fun to measure how tall YOU are and then see whether you or your sprout grow more!

Of course, being part of nature school means you're always on the look out for new discoveries so here are some of the delights from the day!
You certainly made your nature mentors very proud today with all of the ways you showed that you are becoming responsible and thoughtful caretakers of Mother Earth! We can see that you are realizing all things great or small need to be treated with respect and handled with care, just like people. Keep up the great work, nature friends!
