Taking Care of Mother Earth

Did you know that the first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970 in the United States in order to raise awareness about the environment? This year, more than 192 countries and over one billion people will participate worldwide by finding ways to help protect our planet. Today, we looked at how the kids at Coyote Nature school can also help make a difference.

What did you learn today that will make you a better caretaker of the Earth when we talked about the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle),  Leave No Trace principles, and the amount of time it takes for materials to break down in landfill sites.

Junco (Raccoon’s wife) paid us a visit today. She showed us how she uses resources from the earth to carve incredible animals and birds. We know that she takes care of the earth by reusing scraps of wood she gets from another woodworker.  She also showed us how to make beautiful bracelets by recycling scraps of material.

Each of us had the chance today to reflect on the places and things we are grateful for in nature. What were some of your most precious ‘gifts’?

One of our job as caretakers of the earth is to help new plants and trees grow. We were excited to start our seed project with Antman!

Your seeds should be kept in a place that provides them with lots of sunshine and you will need to wet the paper towel if it starts to dry out. See if you can remember which seeds you used. It will be important to check your cup every day to see if any of the seeds have started germinating (sprouting). Don't forget to bring your cup back next Wednesday so that we can share our results!

We learned a lot today about taking care of the earth. See if you can retell the story, 'Just a Dream' to someone at home. Think about how you would like the earth to look 100 years from now and what you can do to help that vision come true. Let's try to remember the nature pledges we made today and make every day 'Earth Day'!
