Tying It Together

Our day was filled with snowy wanderings, sledding adventures, poetry and the excitement of beginning to weaving. What a busy and productive day for us. Check out the bracelets that Owl, Snail and Sunflower made with our lucet forks!

It was the BIG BALE COUNT today. How did you estimate the number of hay and straw bales that are left? When does the new crop of hay and straw come in? We now know how costly it is to keep feeding horses. Do you remember how much Coyote will need to spend just on hay and straw for one year? Does Coyote need someone to Bale her out of debt :)

We are getting better at sensing how animals on the farm feel. We noticed Gus was a little bit low today. What are you looking for when handling animals with care? What ways do they tell you they are feeling well or ill? (energy, expressions, mood)

Hawk is SO kind to us, so we're happy to see her get some snuggles from Jester.

Tell someone at home about the story of your wander. Did you participate in the horse show, or find a new area to explore and sled? During our walk to Pine Haven some of us noticed Deer by the river. Next week, lets try approaching as quiet as possible and see if more people will be able to spot them!

Our poetry work is really gathering momentum. Many of us are close to finishing our good copies, taking care with sizing, spacing, and presentation. Share with someone at home about a challenge you faced while writing your poem. Cardinal got some ideas rolling and then the words flowed like water. Lots of edits and she ended up with a wonderful poem called The Happy Pine Trail.

With our Lucet forks now complete, we’ve begun weaving! Learning a new skill can be challenging, but perseverance helps us discover what we’re capable of making with our own hands. What strategies did you use when your yarn slipped or when your pattern felt confusing? Did you ask a friend for help, watch someone else, or take a breath and try again? Antman is very patient in teaching new skills that he is our GO TO when we're stuck!

Can you believe our winter session is already coming to a close next week? The days may have been cold, but they were full of warmth, growth, and shared adventure. Spend some time this week thinking back on your winter with the Homesteaders. Reflect on the work you did, animals you cared for and the friends you made. Try to bring one of these ideas back for next week when we discuss our blog :) Otter, don't forget wishes for our final day of winter session.
