Built To Last

Our Homesteaders spent the day getting their hands dirty and working together, both during our morning chores and as we began rebuilding our structure at the Outpost.

Push down to go up and up to go down. Can you explain how this works when using a wheelbarrow? These simple machines do lots of jobs around the farm. Can you think of the ways you have used them in our work? Do you have a favourite wheelbarrow - Sunflower does:)

The work never ends in tending the animals. Some had new partnerships today as we were missing team members. When cleaning out animals stalls or houses we were reminded of our little descriptive words to make sure we do the job properly. What are these words? (don't peek until you try.....rake, pick, sprinkle and shake - sounds like a dance to me).

Horse leading really gets the connection going between human and animal. Talk about your experience, either doing this or watching. How did the horses react to our body language and cues. Can you tell from pony recess what the relationships are like between the horses? Some of you became part of the herd when Erin led us in a relaxation exercise in the paddock. It's pretty cool that horses can sense our heartbeats and mood from a distance. That's why they are such amazing therapy companions. Thanks for getting us connected with this Erin!

Now that our bridge is in place, we took a tour back to Outpost. Share a story with someone at home about how you spent your time here. Did you look for critters in the water or start a whittling project? Can you remember 2 ways of how we can stay safe while whittling? (blood bubble, cutting away from our body)

Outpost has always been one of our favourite places to play and explore. Today we did some much needed work on fully rebuilding our shelter. How did you help out? Was your job checking the branches to see if they were still health then adding them to the structure? Tying knots to secure the walls? Raking and cleaning up around the campfire circle? Think about the steps that we will take next week while adding the roof with 2x4s and a tarp. You could draw a picture of what you think the finished shelter will look like and bring it in to show us!
