It’s harvest time! What does harvest time feel like to you? Leaves falling or pumpkin pie or combines on the roads and in the fields? Before harvesting crops and food in gardens, the seeds need to grow. What do seeds need to grow? Are there animals that might eat the seeds as they start to grow? In the game we played, Owl and Water Bear were chasing the squirrels, eating up the seeds and the sprouts. Wolf collected the most food from chasing the squirrels.
In the fall, farmers are busy harvesting but do you know what else they are busy doing? If you know a farmer, ask them how their fall is going and what is keeping them busy? In our activity, we started up four farms including: “Kids Farm” with chickens, “Little Beaver Farm” with bunnies, “Crazy Farm” with cows, ponies and emus and “Tamagotchi (Night) Farm” with horses. These farmers also needed to harvest their grain, pay for supplies, fix their tractors and take care of their animals and themselves. There is so much to do on a farm!
We wrote some letters to thank local farmers for working long days, no holidays, working in all kinds of weather, being able to do so many things, taking care of the land and being a hero! Don’t be surprised if a letter ends up in your mailbox.
At the library, Grey Squirrel shared a story with a word called “murmuration”. Do you remember what that means? It is when huge groups of starlings gather together and move in one large mass across the sky. Grey Squirrel also planned a scavenger hunt and a word puzzle for us.
Back outside, we headed to Mystery Forest for an afternoon adventure. We started looking for a special stick to be a “nature wand”. Beaver’s nature wand had some bark removed by using a whittling knife to make it look like a beaver may have chewed it. Teeth were carved and a tail, then blue and green beads and tape to represent that Beaver is both a water and a forest animal. Finally, a tree of life charm was added because… trees are life! What did you use to decorate your nature wand and why did you choose those things?

Mystery Forest had a huge potluck gathering with chocolate pudding leaf cake and all sorts of goodies. There was a dance competition and so much more. What did you like best about the visit to Mystery Forest? Hummingbird says there will be no potluck next week…it is too much work!
We still miss Beaver! Here are some of the adventures of Little Beaver at Harrington Pond today! Thanks to Water Bear and the Heron team for taking good care of her today!
See you back around the pond next week Forest Friends.
