Choosing the Chill

If you’re someone who chooses the chill, what is it that you love to do outside in the winter? Some of us enjoy the challenge of wading through the deepest snow we can find. Others prefer to dig, tunnel, and build snow caves and snow people. Most of us agree there’s nothing as thrilling as having a friendly competition to see who can slide the farthest down a really steep slope. No matter what brings you the most joy, the secret you need to know is how to dress for the chill!

Use the pictures below to talk about our insulation experiment using  jars of hot water. How does this activity relate to dressing for winter? Be sure to use the words ‘base layer’, ‘middle layer’,’ outer layer’ when you’re explaining which materials you chose.

We layered up and braved the chill of winter for a morning wander to Pine Haven. What was your toughest challenge and how did you overcome it?

Thanks to Coyote, Rabbit, and Chickadee for using snowshoes to break a trail for us!

Here are some other activities that helped keep us warm and happy today…

Thanks to all the Chickadees who took the time to make Survival Buddies for the birds last week! The niches were empty this morning so we filled them up again and look at what happened just minutes later. How does it feel to know you are making a difference for our feathered friends' survival this winter?

Even though the chill can be a thrill, sometimes the best part of the day is the warmth that is waiting for us at home. Be sure to act like a ruffed grouse and give your parents a big cuddle to show them how much you appreciate their efforts to dress you for success every week!
