Discovering a Water World!

After weeks of watching the changes in the creek levels, testing out how water flows by throwing sticks into it, noticing new plants growing and birds flying around it. Today was the day we explored the creek at “Crayfish Catch”. Perhaps it was your first time discovering a creek with your child. Was it scary for them? For you? We checked for creatures with our eyes first while at the same time looking for areas where there was deeper water because once you get into the creek things start to muck up and it becomes hard to see.
Do you remember what kinds of creatures we found in the water? Fish, Crayfish, Damselfly Larva and Cranefly Larva. We even had some mommy crayfish carrying around eggs under their ‘tail’. They are protective of their eggs.

“Watch Out” or “Be Careful”! These are some words that one might say while looking at a crayfish or while exploring water. Try using more specific and supportive words like “Notice how these rocks are wet, let’s move slowly.” so that your child might gain confidence and trust in their own abilities when it comes to risk taking.
