The Acorns and Oaks gathered today at Stoneridge Farm and Harrington Conservation Area. This week we continued to explore the natural world using our senses. Our first activity focused on using our eyes and hands to find and collect a colourful egg. Did your child want to find a particular colour? Did your child have trouble finding an egg? What sort of ‘spring surprise’ did you help them put inside the egg? As we continued along the trail, did your child see some of the colours of spring popping up? Could they see something colourful if you pointed to it?
In our story this week, Birding for Babies, we were introduced to some colourful birds. Another book by Chloe Goodhart features numbers and birds which you might find in your backyard. Maybe you or your child’s interest in becoming a birdwatcher will be sparked by the birds we see this spring? We made a small bird nest from strings and natural materials and some homemade glue (one cup water and two tablespoons of flour; cooked gently on the stove; let cool and it’s ready to use).
We explored our world looking for small bugs, slugs and snails using our eyes and gentle hands. Sometimes even a one finger touch is enough and remember to use positive words for the little steps your child is making towards becoming more familiar with the world around them. What did your child enjoy about this week’s adventure? Happy Trails and get outside this weekend to look for bunnies and birds!
