Sparks of Knowledge

Making popcorn over a fire created by the homesteaders was a wonderful way to embrace the changing season. We spent the day learning about how we can stay warm in the coming winter by renovating our shelters and learning how to build fires using flint and steel.

We had the chance to meet new animal visitors on the farm today. Each of these visitors have their own story. Tell as much of their story as you know to your family at home.

Who were you responsible to care for today? You were with the same partner as last week. Do you notice any changes in how you worked together? Think about how you could give others a helping hand if you finish your chores early.

Animals here are often brought in from overcrowded or neglectful situations. This can make them shy or seem hyper in asking for attention. It takes time to earn an animal's trust. Talk about your experiences with the rescue animals at the farm. How can you create a trusting bond with the animals you handle?

Not all animals have it that hard...

During our wander we explored Pine Haven and Christmas forest. How did you use your time during our wander? Did you pretend to be an animal on a farm, explore Christmas Forest, practice your knots or make some beautiful art?

Although the wind loved to blow your paintings away while you were working, they turned out great!

Blue Racer asked everyone what they thought it meant if a wooly bear has such a big brown section. Everyone thought it means we’re getting lots of snow but Antman told us it’s actually the opposite!

Making a fire is an essential skill for a Homesteader. Do you remember what the three elements are needed to create a fire? (Heat, air, Fuel) Walk someone at home through what steps to make a fire. Using flint and steel can take a bit of practice. If your family was to try this, what are some tips you could give them to be successful? Once we got the fire going, we cooked some popcorn over the fire. Special thank you to Antman for bringing this treat.

How did you help out with the renovations on our shelter at Outpost. Were you someone who helped with cleaning the inside, laying boughs on top or tying down the tarp? During this week, think of some ways we could make the inside more cozy. Would you put in seating, add a floor or find decoration in the forest to make it feel like home?
