Taken For Granted (no more)!

Some creatures get all of the attention. Just think about watching baby birds trying to fly or an osprey as it soars overhead. These things usually make us smile and say “Aww!’ Now imagine you turn over a leaf and there’s a slimy slug underneath or you notice a leech in the water. Many of us would say “Ah!” and run the other way. The aquatic insects who were kind enough to let us catch them today were probably surprised to have such a big fuss made over them. Most of them are used to being ignored and taken for granted.

Share the interesting stories about which new ‘pond friends’ you were lucky enough to meet. Where did you find them? What cool features did they have (ex. legs like oars). Which aquatic insect is now on your nature bucket list to find in the future and why?

We also know how lucky we are to call Harrington our ‘Friday home’! People from the community are always willing to lend a hand, just like Mammoth did again today. Using some large limbs on the ground, wood, and rope, he helped us create a better way to get up and down from our favourite tree that we love to perch in. What other things did you learn from Mammoth today? How did you feel when everyone, including the younger Herons were able to get up and down safely?

Other interactions and discoveries we made today

If you’re someone who usually takes people or things in nature for granted, stop and think about how you can show more appreciation. What can you do this coming week to let them know how much you value them? Every week, I thank my lucky stars that I am able to come to nature school and spend the day with children and adults who appreciate nature as much as I do!
