The Right Tools for the Job!

Whether we were in the Hall or outside on the trails, in the forest or on Butterfly Hill, our goal was to keep our environment safe and healthy! Sometimes we can’t do it on our own. We need our friends to give us a helping hand and we need the right tool for the job! Scissors came in handy upon arriving into the Hall as our grass-head friends were in need of hair cuts. Watch out for the roots, we don’t want them to go bald! How much taller will the grass on your hair head grow by next week? Find a ruler at home and think of a smart guess, an estimate, of how many millimetres or centimetres your grass will grow. Don’t forget to bring your estimate next week! Will they all grow? What needs to be in place for that to happen? We will have to wait and see!
Looks like things are growing everywhere! Outside the hall Dragonfly showed us where the grass seed was spread and is trying to grow. Careful where you step! A good suggestion as we walked to the trails. Which tool did you pick to help clear the trails of rocks and pointy branches to make it safe for walkers? Grey Wolf and Leopard Frog used teamwork to move rocks out of the path. Wonder if the trail visitors will use our rock bridge so they don’t get too wet and muddy? They certainly will have a nice clear path after trimming some of the branches pointing into the trail. Black Bear has a keen eye for what was in the way and where to trim the tree or shrub back. Pin Cherry and Dragonfly fly used their muscles to pull tree branches away from the trail. Great work Turtle Team!
Worms, worms and more worms! With all the rock removal, worms were popping up everywhere. No extra tool was needed to pick those up, fingers worked just fine!
Lots of care was taken to clean up our beautiful forest and trails. There were also opportunities to notice some surprises. A cache from the Heron group! Thanks Herons! We especially loved the feathers! Black Bear also noticed a little egg on the ground and after further investigation we noticed that there was another egg and a nest on the ground. Sometimes it is best just to look at nature and then leave things where you find them.
In the library Grey Squirrel read us the story The Hike. How was the children’s hike the same or different than ours?
What was your favourite part or discovery while on our hiking adventures? At the end of the day we reflected in our journals, full of pressed plants and flowers, drawings of pollinators, bird feathers, flies, butterflies, birds and bees. Bald Eagle drew a bee enjoying the smell of sweet blossoms. Pin cherry drew a flower with a butterfly. Will we see some pollinators in action next week? Might need some new tools for the job. Hmm…what should we take with us?
