Tracking the Past

Chickadee interpreting the story of the deer and predator tracks
Chickadee interpreting the story of the deer and predator tracks

A fresh layer of snow covers the forest floor and as a Haudenosaunee hunter, you are excited and very hopeful. You give thanks to the Creator as you pull on your winter moccasins made out of deer skin with the thick, warm hair on the inside. The one thing you will be looking for when you leave the longhouse this morning is tracks - animal tracks. Think about what it was like today to experience the first snow from the point of view of the First Nations people.

What animals would the hunters have expected to find in this area? Which tracks were you able to identify in the snow using the guide cards? We also talked about some of the other signs animals leave that let us know they were here. Share with your family the signs you discovered and who you think left them.

When we played games like “Winter’s Coming” and “Hunters versus Deer”, did you prefer to be the hunter or the hunted? We know that the men of the village would practice the skills they needed for hunting by playing other games. What did you learn about setting snares with Antman?  Look at the pictures below and see if you can explain how these activities might have made them better hunters.

The Haudenosaunee elders and parents used storytelling to explain the nature that surrounded them. They also used legends to teach their children lessons. See if you can retell the story of the “Doll-with-no-face” to your family. Can you think of a story your parents have told you that taught you a lesson?

Just like the Haudenosaunee, you are all very good storytellers. Take a look at some of the other pictures from today and see if you can explain the story behind them by filling in the details.

When you're outside this weekend, don't forget to keep your eyes open for other 'stories in the snow'! You can use your storytelling skills to tell us all about what you discovered when we're together again next week. Can't wait!
